Roti John

Roti John is a popular Malaysian street food — a delicious omelet sandwich with spiced meat, onions, and eggs. Adding Puteri Chilli Sauce gives it an extra tangy, spicy kick!

Ingredients

  • 2 long sandwich buns or hot dog buns (halved)
  • 200 g minced meat (chicken or beef)
  • 2 eggs 
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped 
  • Salt and pepper to taste (optional)
  • 1-2 tbsp cooking oil
  • Butter or margarine (for toasting the buns)
  • Shredded lettuce, cabbage, or cheese (optional toppings)
  • Puteri Cili Sos (served on the side for dipping)

Instructions

  1. Cook the Meat Filling:
    • Heat oil in a pan over medium heat.
    • Sauté the chopped onions until soft and fragrant.
    • Add the minced meat and cook until it is fully browned.
    • Season with salt and pepper if needed. Set aside to cool slightly.
  2. Mix with Eggs:
    • Beat the eggs in a bowl.
    • Add the cooked meat mixture and stir to combine.
  3. Assemble and Cook the Sandwich:
    • Heat a bit of oil in a non-stick or flat pan.
    • Pour some of the egg-meat mixture into the pan, roughly the length of your sandwich bun.
    • Press the cut side of the bun onto the egg mixture while it’s still wet.
    • Cook for 2-3 minutes until the egg is fully set and golden.
    • Flip the whole sandwich and toast the outside of the bun for 1-2 minutes. Add butter or margarine if desired.
  4. Serve:
    • Slice into portions
    • Serve hot with Puteri Cili Sos on the sides as a dipping sauce.
